Hybrid work changed where documents need to land. A signed form, a marked-up contract, a page pulled from a reference builder – none of it is useful sitting on the glass of a multi-function printer (MFP). It has to reach the place your work already lives: a file on the computer in front of you, or a document in the cloud app your team runs on.

Here are the two most common paths, and when you might choose one over the other.
Path 1: Scan straight to your desktop (Windows and ChromeOS)
If you’re already sitting at your computer, the shortest route is often straight to the machine in front of you.
Both Windows and ChromeOS support the Mopria scan standard, so a connected Mopria certified scanner or MFP works without a manufacturer-specific driver. On Windows, when a manufacturer’s driver isn’t available through Windows Update, the system falls back to the Mopria certified path automatically. On a Chromebook (ChromeOS 89 or greater), the same standards-based scanning is built-in – no extra software to install, regardless of the scanner’s brand.
This path is best when:
- You’re already working on that computer, and the file’s next stop is a local folder or an app open on the same machine.
- You want desktop scan controls – resolution, color or black-and-white, file format, scan area – before the page goes anywhere.
Once the scan is on your desktop, getting it into the cloud is a normal upload or sync step through whatever platform your organization already uses.
Path 2: Scan to your Android device, then hand off to the cloud (Mopria Scan)
When the document needs to be in the cloud right away – ready to open later from a PC or a phone – capturing it on your Android device can be the more direct route.
The Mopria Scan app (Android 12 or higher, from Google Play or the Mopria website) finds a nearby Mopria certified scanner or MFP, pulls the scan off that device, and lets you send it onward. Mopria Scan pulls the scan from the certified scanner, not from your phone’s camera, so you get a clean, properly formatted file – not a photo of a page.

What the handoff looks like: Mopria Scan + Adobe Acrobat
A concrete example makes the bridge-to-connector split easy to see:
- Place the original document in the scanner or copier. Open Mopria Scan, choose the scanner and your settings (source, sides, type, file format, resolution, color, size) and tap Scan.
- When the scan finishes, tap Share.
- Select Adobe Acrobat.
- Acrobat opens the file. Tap menu, then Save to Document Cloud.
- The scan is now in the cloud, ready to open on your PC or mobile device.
Notice where each job happens. Mopria Scan gets the page off the MFP; Adobe Acrobat owns the cloud save, the account, and the access controls. Swap in a different cloud-native app and the pattern holds – the connector app owns the destination, and Mopria Scan is the standards-based on-ramp that feeds it.
Which path fits the moment?
Rather than crowning one winner, match the path to the situation:
- Working at your desk, file stays local or goes into a desktop app → scan straight to Windows or ChromeOS.
- Need it in the cloud immediately, or you’re away from your main computer → Mopria Scan on Android, then hand off to your cloud app.
- Moving between shared MFPs across distributed sites or a mixed-brand fleet → either path saves you from per-device drivers, so use whichever endpoint you have in hand.
