From Print to Painting: More Than Just a Picture

Do you ever find yourself reminiscing about that one meatloaf your mother used to make when you were little, or thinking about the times that you woke up in the middle of the night on the couch, and miraculously found a blanket on you?

Although we should show appreciation for our mothers every day, Mother’s Day is the one day a year that represents a tradition of recognizing the women in our lives who raised us, dried our tears, and well, mothered us.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, daughters and sons all over the country are thinking of how they can show their mothers how much they appreciate all the sacrifices made during their lives. Conveying a lifetime worth of gratitude in the form of a gift isn’t easy, but we have the best Mother’s Day gift idea to make her feel extra special on this day – and it starts with your mobile device.

Turn Your Mum’s Favorite Picture into Artwork

With this project, we are going to show you how to transfer a digital photo onto canvas in just a few simple steps. After completing these steps, you’ll end up having a beautiful creation, perfect for Mother’s Day to give to all the superwomen out there.

Step 1: Collect Your Materials

To get started, you will need:

  • An Android device
  • Blank canvas
  • Scissors
  • A tool to smooth the paper (a credit card will work just fine)
  • Gel medium
  • Brush
  • Rag or sponge
  • A bowl of water

Step 2: Fine-Tune the Photograph

From the gallery on your Android device, choose what you think is your mum’s favorite picture. It can be the last selfie you took together while you were on a run, or your graduation picture with the family. Anything goes!

After selecting the photo that you want to turn into a painting, download and use the Mopria Print Service App to print your picture directly from your Android device. Mopria offers Android users the ability to wirelessly locate and connect to millions of certified printers worldwide. The app also offers a wide range of customizable features, such as changing the color of the page, paper size, media type, and orientation.

Since you may need to resize and/or crop your chosen photo to the same dimensions as your canvas, you can still use the Mopria Print App on your mobile device to get your photo-ready.

Tip: Once your photo is ready with the format you need, print your photo on a regular printer copier paper.

Step 3: Turn Your Digital Photo into Painting

To transfer your printed photo to your canvas, you will need to cut out the photo from the printed paper. After applying a layer of gel medium to the entire surface of the canvas with a brush, press your photo face-down on the canvas. Then use a credit card or any other smoothing tool you have at home to remove any excess air bubbles. Turn the canvas over and let it sit overnight to dry completely.

Step 4: Remove the Paper

After waking up and shaking off the excitement to see your work almost completed, grab your sponge and some water to wet the paper, then use your fingers to gently run the paper to remove it from the canvas.  Repeat this process as many times as necessary to eliminate all the bits of paper from the canvas – make sure not to press too hard on it, or you might scrape away the image underneath. Lastly, use a clean rag to gently wipe the scrap of paper fibers over the photo. If there are scratches on it, don’t worry. It’ll only give the painting a more vintage look.

Step 5: It’s Time to Wrap It

After the canvas is completely dry, you can choose to wrap your unique gift using your craft supplies. If you’re not much of a wrapper, then place your painting into a bag to protect it from the dust.
